Things to Do in Chersonissos

As a representative Crete seaside resort, Chersonissos has a lot to offer to visitors who seek out quality vacation time. Picture-perfect beaches, small Greek eateries, tavernas, cafes and bars, souvenirs and art shops are abundant. The nightlife is surprisingly vibrant for a small town — perfect for enjoying music and sipping wine in good company during long summer nights.

Beaches

Conveniently located along the seafront, Chersonissos is near many beautiful beaches. Here we can find the stunning Sarandaris Coves (Sarandaris Beach, The Covers of Hersonissos). Calm, shallow crystal-blue waters of Sarandaris Coves look like a page straight out of the tourist brochure. Due to the typical lack of wind, it’s a perfect getaway for the entire family. Another one worth visiting is the Analipsis Beach, with the eponymous church of the Ascension and surrounded by the olive groves, traditional village, and lively Greek gardens.

Places of Interest

Skotino Cave (Agia Paraskevi)

One of the largest (cathedral size), historically most significant, and best-known caves on the island. It’s 160 meters deep and 36 meters wide and located halfway between Chersonissos and Heraklion. It features a church nearby devoted to Saint Paraskevi.

Artifacts going all the way back to the Minoan era have been found in the cave, suggesting it had a rule of a place of worship to the fertility goddess Artemis. The cave is especially inviting to visitors with an adventurous spirit. The entrance is free. Small children are not recommended to bring with as the decline might be too steep for them. Quality, appropriate footwear is recommended if you want to explore the cave.

Koutouloufari village

The small houses built in traditional Cretan rural style, grouped to imitate the authentic village experience, are an absolute must-visit. For an authentic Cretan experience, enjoy the local cuisine in one of the tavernas, savor a cup of coffee in a coffee shop or merely enjoy a walk in olive groves along the cobblestoned streets or nearby the port.

Lychnostatis Open Air Museum

Lovers of traditional folk Cretan culture and tradition are lining up to see this establishment. Originated as a private collection, it features exciting artifacts from Cretan daily life, like olive oil and wine presses. The place also includes a library, folk art gallery, a theater, and an auditorium.

Acquaplus Waterpark

The sizzling hot Greek summer has its charm, but sometimes we want — and need — to cool down a bit. Featuring a variety of slides and rides for visitors of all ages, it’s a fun, family-friendly place for spending a hot afternoon.

Labyrinth Theme Park

Minoan maze, archery, horse riding, and mini-golf course, and friendly staff are only a few features of the Labyrinth Theme Park. Even if you are not a Greek mythology buff, you will find plenty to do and see — especially if you’re into labyrinths. The visitors are especially thrilled about how family-oriented and kids-friendly Theme Park is. No better place to have fun with your youngest ones for hours and hours.
