What waits there is not a beach in the way the name of a resort usually promises. The shore breaks into a series of small rocky coves, each below the property that faces it, reached by steps or a short path rather than along a promenade.
Koutsounari two kilometres west has long shingle beaches and Makrigialos further east has sand. Ferma has neither, and after nearly four hours of driving that is worth knowing in advance rather than on arrival.
Hotel Porto Belissario, Oleander Garden and Aaron Apartments sit above the coves within a kilometre of the centre, on short access roads off the coast road that mostly carry no name. Give the property name and the owner's directions, because the turning is what your driver needs.
The coach network reaches Ierapetra from Heraklion rather than from Chania, and the eastern coast service passes Ferma on the main road.
