Airport pickup

Your pickup at Heraklion Airport

Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall at Heraklion Airport, holding a sign with your name on it. Your transfer starts there rather than at a taxi rank, so there is no queue to join and no fare to agree on the spot.

Heraklion International Airport (HER) is Crete's main gateway and handled 4,039,249 international arrivals in 2025. Heraklion International Airport concentrates its arrivals into one short terminal, which keeps the walk from baggage reclaim to the meeting area brief even at peak season.

The driver confirms your name and destination, loads your luggage, and leaves from the airport car park. Nothing is settled on the day when you have paid online, and the fare on your voucher does not change.

The airport sits on the coast road immediately east of Heraklion city, which puts every eastern resort on a direct run without crossing town. Westbound journeys join the same national road in the opposite direction.

Where we meet you

Inside the arrivals hall, past baggage reclaim, at the transfers meeting area. Your driver holds a name sign that matches the booking.

Look for the sign rather than a taxi rank or a car park level. The phone number on your voucher reaches a person who can locate your driver, if the sign is not where you expect it.

Flight delays and waiting time

Give us your flight number at booking. Your pickup is then scheduled against that flight rather than against a clock time, and the driver is told to arrive later when the flight lands late.

Tell us as early as you can when a flight is cancelled or rerouted, so the driver can be reassigned.

Lassithi

Arriving in Elounda

Elounda is a resort town on Mirabello Bay in the Lassithi region of eastern Crete, 11 kilometres north of Agios Nikolaos. It grew from a fishing village into the island's main luxury resort strip, and most of its large hotels sit along the water on the road between the town and Plaka.

The town itself is compact and walkable. The harbour, the tavernas and the central square sit within a few hundred metres of each other, and Elounda Beach is 450 metres from the centre. Guests staying in the bay-side resorts are usually a short drive from that centre rather than in it.

Elounda is the departure point for Spinalonga, the fortified island 4.8 kilometres away by boat. Elounda also sits beside Olous, a submerged ancient settlement 1.1 kilometres from the town.

Good to know about Elounda
  • Mirabello Bay setting, with most resorts strung along the coast road towards Plaka
  • Boats to Spinalonga island leave from the harbour, 4.8 km across the bay
  • Elounda Beach is 450 m from the town centre; Almyros Beach is 12 km south
  • Agios Nikolaos, with the Archaeological Museum, is 10.7 km away
  • The town is compact enough that most visitors walk once they arrive
Drop-off in Elounda

We drop you at the door of your hotel, villa or apartment, including the resorts spread along the Plaka road north of town.

Elounda's central streets are narrow and busy in season. Drivers use the hotel entrance rather than the town square where access allows, so you are not walking the last stretch with luggage.

Route

The drive from Heraklion Airport to Elounda

The drive runs east along the VOAK, the national road that follows Crete's north coast. It leaves the airport perimeter directly, so there is no crossing of Heraklion city and no urban traffic at either end of the day.

For the first 40 kilometres the road stays high above the sea, passing the exits for Kokkini Hani, Gouves, Hersonissos and Malia. This is the busiest tourist strip on the island and the stretch where the road carries most traffic in July and August. After Malia the resorts thin out, the road climbs inland through the Selinari gorge, and traffic drops away.

You leave the national road at Agios Nikolaos, roughly 55 kilometres in. The last 11 kilometres are the memorable part: a coastal road that climbs out of Agios Nikolaos and then drops towards Elounda with Mirabello Bay open on your right and Spinalonga visible across the water. It is slower than the national road, which is why the final sixth of the distance takes closer to a quarter of the time.

About 1 hour is the normal door-to-door figure. Allow longer for a mid-afternoon arrival in August, when the Hersonissos and Malia section carries its heaviest traffic.

Four other Lassithi destinations sit on this same road and are quoted separately from this airport: Malia at 32.1 kilometres, Sissi at 40.6, Milatos at 44.6 and Agios Nikolaos at 59.8. Elounda, at 67.4, is reached by carrying on past all of them and then turning north along the coast.

How else could you make this trip?

The public route is the intercity KTEL bus from Heraklion to Agios Nikolaos, then a local bus or taxi for the final 11 kilometres to Elounda.

That means reaching the bus station from the airport first, then a change at Agios Nikolaos, then a third leg, with luggage, on a fixed timetable, and with the last connection of the day gone by early evening. A direct transfer removes the two changes and runs at whatever hour your flight lands.

At a glance
  • 67.4 km (41.9 mi) door to door
  • About 1 hr with normal traffic
  • Direct, no changes, no other passengers
  • Fixed from €74 per vehicle

Going home

Elounda to Heraklion Airport: departure transfers

The return leg is the same journey in reverse: 67.4 km (41.9 mi), about 1 hr, and the same fixed fare from €74 per vehicle. Your driver collects you from your accommodation in Elounda at the agreed time and takes you straight to Heraklion Airport.

Elounda to Heraklion Airport is the same road in reverse, and the same 67.4 kilometres. The Agios Nikolaos coastal section is slower in the morning when resort traffic is moving, so departure pickups are set a little earlier than the arrival timing would suggest.

Book both directions together and the return is held at the same fare. Switch the form at the top of this page to Departure, or select a return when you book.

When should the pickup be?

For a departure from Elounda we work back from your flight: about 1 hour of driving, plus the airport check-in and security time your airline asks for, plus a buffer for the Agios Nikolaos coast road.

Give us the flight number at booking and the exact pickup time is confirmed on your voucher.
