Chania Town is the second largest city in Crete and the capital of the Chania region, built around a Venetian harbour on the north-west coast. Chania's old town fills the ground behind that harbour as a dense quarter of Venetian and Ottoman lanes, most of them closed to traffic and several too narrow for a car to enter at all.
The city divides into parts that matter when you arrive. Topanas and Splantzia are the old quarters on either side of the harbour, Nea Chora is the seafront neighbourhood immediately west with the nearest town beach, and the modern city spreads inland around the covered market.
Chania sits 6.5 kilometres from the ferry port at Souda and forms the road junction for the whole west of the island, which is why it is used as a base for Samaria, Elafonissi and Balos rather than only as a destination in itself.

The road drops to Georgioupolis and Kavros at the mouth of the Almyros, passes the turning inland to Lake Kournas, then runs along the edge of Apokoronas with the exits for Vamos, Gavalochori, Kalyves and Almyrida signposted in turn. The last climb is over Aptera, where Souda Bay appears below on the right as a long deep inlet with the naval base at its head.
About 2 hr 7 min is the normal door-to-door figure. The two city ends are what vary rather than the road between them: Heraklion's centre at 08:00 and the approach to Chania's harbour on an August evening each add minutes that the open road does not.
