Chora Sfakion is a small port on the south coast of Crete, at the foot of the mountains in the Sfakia region. Chora Sfakion is the road head for a stretch of coast that has no roads at all: the villages west of it, Loutro and Agia Roumeli among them, are reached only by boat or on foot.
The village itself is a single curve of harbour with tavernas and rooms above it, and a pebble beach on either side.
Its ferry is what most visitors come for. Walkers finishing the Samaria gorge at Agia Roumeli take the boat east to Chora Sfakion and continue by road from there.

From this side of the island the village is reached along the coast rather than over the top. The road turns south above Rethymno, climbs through Armeni across the spine of Crete, comes down to the Libyan Sea near Plakias, then runs west above the water through Rodakino and past the castle at Fragkokastello.

Chora Sfakion is the road head, and that is the point of it. West of the village the coast has no road at all: Loutro and Agia Roumeli are reached only by boat or on foot, and the ferry from this harbour is the connection. Walkers finishing the Samaria gorge come out at Agia Roumeli and take that boat east to here.
