Skaleta is a coastal village on the north shore east of Rethymno, at the point where the national road returns to the sea after the inland stretch behind Panormos. Skaleta marks the start of the long beach that runs west through Sfakaki and Adelianos Kampos into Rethymno itself.
The village is small, with a handful of tavernas and a mix of apartments and family-run hotels along the shore.
Development here is lower and thinner than on the strip closer to Rethymno, which is the reason people pick it over the larger beach resorts a few kilometres west.
