The village keeps a small harbour with tavernas around it and the remains of a fortress on the low headland beside it. The beaches are small, sand and shingle either side of the port, and the whole place is walkable in a few minutes. Panormo Beach, Kastro Apartments, Glaros and the two Grecotel Club Marine properties are among the places around the port and the beaches either side of it, all of them within the few minutes it takes to walk the village.
The fortress on the headland beside the harbour is the reason the village sits where it does. A sheltered anchorage with defensible ground above it was worth holding, and the modern village still occupies the same small piece of flat land behind the port.
The intercity coach passes the Panormos junction on the national road.
Being set down there leaves a short walk into the village, but reaching the coach means the airport bus into Chania and a change at the central station first.
