A sheltered anchorage with defensible ground above it was worth holding, and the modern village still fills the same small piece of flat land behind the port.
The KTEL coach between Heraklion and Rethymno passes the Panormos junction on the national road.
Being set down there leaves a short walk into the village, shorter than the same arrangement at Bali, but the coach still runs from Heraklion's bus station rather than the airport and sets you on the main road rather than at your accommodation.
