Airport pickup

Your pickup at Heraklion Airport

Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall at Heraklion Airport, holding a sign with your name on it. Your transfer starts there rather than at a taxi rank, so there is no queue to join and no fare to agree on the spot.

Heraklion International Airport (HER) is Crete's main gateway and handled 4,039,249 international arrivals in 2025. Heraklion International Airport concentrates its arrivals into one short terminal, which keeps the walk from baggage reclaim to the meeting area brief even at peak season.

The driver confirms your name and destination, loads your luggage, and leaves from the airport car park. Nothing is settled on the day when you have paid online, and the fare on your voucher does not change.

The airport sits on the coast road immediately east of Heraklion city, which puts every eastern resort on a direct run without crossing town. Westbound journeys join the same national road in the opposite direction.

Where we meet you

Inside the arrivals hall, past baggage reclaim, at the transfers meeting area. Your driver holds a name sign that matches the booking.

Look for the sign rather than a taxi rank or a car park level. The phone number on your voucher reaches a person who can locate your driver, if the sign is not where you expect it.

Flight delays and waiting time

Give us your flight number at booking. Your pickup is then scheduled against that flight rather than against a clock time, and the driver is told to arrive later when the flight lands late.

Tell us as early as you can when a flight is cancelled or rerouted, so the driver can be reassigned.

Heraklion

Arriving in Agia Pelagia

Agia Pelagia is a resort built around a sheltered horseshoe cove on the coast west of Heraklion. Agia Pelagia sits below the main road on a steep hillside, so the resort drops in terraces towards the water and most hotels look down over the bay rather than sitting on it.

The main beach is a sandy strip at the head of the cove, protected by headlands on both sides. That shelter is the reason the water here stays calm when the open north coast is choppy, and it is why the resort suits families and swimmers.

Several smaller coves sit either side of the main bay, reached on foot or by a short drive. The resort is compact enough to walk, though the gradients are steep in places.

Good to know about Agia Pelagia
  • A sheltered horseshoe cove, calm when the open coast is rough
  • Sandy main beach at the head of the bay, with smaller coves either side
  • The resort terraces down a steep hillside, so many hotels have sea views
  • Compact enough to walk, though steep in places
  • Close to Heraklion while feeling separate from it
Drop-off in Agia Pelagia

We drop you at the door of your hotel, apartment or villa, including the properties high on the hillside above the bay.

The access roads down into the cove are narrow and steeply switchbacked. Drivers take them at the pace the surface allows rather than dropping you at the top to walk down.

Route

The drive from Heraklion Airport to Agia Pelagia

This is one of the few airport runs that goes west rather than east, and that changes the shape of the journey. The road skirts Heraklion on the bypass before joining the VOAK, the national road, on the far side of the city.

Once past Heraklion the road climbs and the coast opens up on the right, running above Ammoudara and then out along a stretch of headlands where the sea is usually in view. Traffic thins noticeably compared with the eastern resorts, because the development on this side of the city is far lighter.

The last part is the memorable one. You leave the national road and drop down a steep switchbacked lane into the cove, with the bay appearing below you in stages. Agia Pelagia sits in a horseshoe of hillside, so the descent is slow and the hotels are terraced above the water rather than beside it.

About 26 minutes is the normal figure. The distance is short but the descent is not quick, which is why the time is closer to Chersonissos than the shorter kilometres suggest.

How else could you make this trip?

There is no direct bus. The public option involves reaching Heraklion bus station, taking a westbound service that stops on the main road above Agia Pelagia, then covering the descent into the cove on foot.

That descent is the problem. It is steep, exposed and long enough with luggage that most people who try it once do not repeat it.

At a glance
  • 25.3 km (15.7 mi) door to door
  • About 26 min with normal traffic
  • Direct, no changes, no other passengers

Going home

Agia Pelagia to Heraklion Airport: departure transfers

The return leg is the same journey in reverse: 25.3 km (15.7 mi), about 26 min, and the same fixed fare from €38 per vehicle. Your driver collects you from your accommodation in Agia Pelagia at the agreed time and takes you straight to Heraklion Airport.

Agia Pelagia back to Heraklion Airport is the same 25.3 kilometres in reverse, at the same fixed fare.

The climb out of the cove is slower than the run back along the national road, so departure pickups allow for it rather than assuming the drive is symmetrical.

Book both directions together and the return is held at the same fare. Switch the form at the top of this page to Departure, or select a return when you book.

When should the pickup be?

For a departure from Agia Pelagia we work back from your flight: about 26 minutes of driving, plus the check-in and security time your airline asks for, plus a buffer for the climb out of the bay and the Heraklion bypass.

Give us the flight number at booking and the exact pickup time is confirmed on your voucher.

Child seats cost nothing extra. Reserve the seat in the booking form and state the child's age, so the correct seat is fitted before the driver sets off.

Free cancellation

Flight-timed pickups, 24 hours a day

Your pickup is set against your flight number, not a clock time. Transfers run at any hour, which covers night landings and pre-dawn departures.
