Agia Pelagia is a resort built around a sheltered horseshoe cove on the coast west of Heraklion. Agia Pelagia sits below the main road on a steep hillside, so the resort drops in terraces towards the water and most hotels look down over the bay rather than sitting on it.
The main beach is a sandy strip at the head of the cove, protected by headlands on both sides. That shelter is the reason the water here stays calm when the open north coast is choppy, and it is why the resort suits families and swimmers.
