Karteros and Amnissos pass first, the city's own beaches, then Kokkini Hani at 9.9 kilometres. Gournes follows immediately after it.
CretAquarium is the landmark on arrival. It stands on the shore on the site of the former American air base, and its access road is the same turning that serves much of the settlement, so it is a useful reference point when giving the driver an address.
Gournes marks a boundary on this coast. West of it the shore belongs to Heraklion, with Amnissos and Karteros used by the city rather than by visitors, and east of it the resorts begin in earnest at Gouves and run without much of a gap as far as Malia.
