The road turns east and follows the south coast through Koutsounari and Ferma, running just above the water with the Libyan Sea open to the right and almost no development on the inland side. Makrigialos begins where the sand does, and the resort runs along the road for several kilometres. The last 25 kilometres are the part to plan around. East of Ierapetra the road narrows and follows the shore, and there is no alternative route if it is blocked, so an early flight home is timed with more margin than the distance alone would justify.
The public route needs two changes and most of a day.
A coach from Heraklion to Agios Nikolaos, a second to Ierapetra, then a third along the south coast to Makrigialos, all on timetables that were not designed to connect with each other. The first leg also starts from Heraklion's bus station rather than the airport.
