This is the longest of the four transfers the port sells along that shore, and the only one that ends on sand. The eastern resort coast comes first, Malia and then Sissi and Milatos, with Agios Nikolaos at 63.2 kilometres from the quay and Istron at 74.1.
Pachia Ammos is where the road turns south across the isthmus, and Ierapetra follows at 96.7 kilometres. Ferma, Koutsounari, Agia Fotia and Koutsouras carry the last half hour along the coast road, each of them a separate transfer with its own fare.
Makrigialos is cheaper than Koutsouras despite being further out, which is unusual enough to state plainly. The Standard car is €120 here and €125 there over a difference of 3 kilometres, while the SUV and the Premium cost the same on both.
The beach is what people come for. It is long, sandy and shallow a long way out, which is why families choose this stretch over the coves and shingle west of it.
Development runs for several kilometres along the coast road rather than gathering around a centre, and a good number of the properties stand on unnamed lanes above it. Miramare Studios, White River Cottages, Mikri Poli, Akrotiri and Niki Apartments are spread across that distance rather than clustered, so the accommodation name and the part of the resort both belong on the booking.
The Pefki gorge climbs inland from the village behind the beach, which is the walk most guests here do at least once.
The KTEL coach from Heraklion reaches Ierapetra with a change at Agios Nikolaos, and the eastern coastal service continues to Makrigialos.
That is the city bus station first, two coaches and a change, then a set-down on the coast road with the accommodation possibly a kilometre either side of it. The car goes to the door and the fare is fixed whichever end of the resort that door is at.
