That continuity is worth a moment on a dawn arrival. You have come in by sea to the same stretch of coast, at roughly the hour the ancient harbour would have been busiest, and the site is a short walk from where the car sets you down. The city's own beaches lie within 10 kilometres of the quay and are priced almost identically: Ammoudara at 6.1 kilometres to the west, Karteros at 7.7 and Amnissos at 9.0 to the east. The choice between them is about which side of Heraklion you want to be on. Cruise passengers use this quay as well as ferry passengers, and their constraint is the opposite one. A ship with a fixed all-aboard time can reach a beach 9 kilometres away and be back with hours to spare, which is why the near shore is the usual choice on a short call.
The coastal bus passes Amnissos but starts from Heraklion's bus station rather than the port.
