The car leaves the port gate and turns west, 50.2 kilometres in about 52 minutes, along a coast that behaves quite differently from the eastern one.
Westbound there is no resort strip to clear. The road passes Heraklion on its seaward side, leaves the built-up area at Ammoudara and climbs onto the cliffs, and from there it is open road the whole way. The hour of your arrival barely changes the timing, which is the opposite of the eastern routes from this quay.
What does change the timing is the end. The Bali turning drops about 2 kilometres from the national road to the water, on a steep and narrow descent, and the village is built around four separate coves on a slope rather than along one beach.
After a six o'clock docking that descent is done in poor light. It is unlit and the bends are tight, so the driver takes it slowly and the timing here allows for that rather than assuming the average speed of the road above.
The Rethymno coach passes the Bali junction on the national road, but it leaves from Heraklion's bus station rather than the quay.
After an overnight crossing that means moving into the city with your cases, waiting for a departure, and then a descent of about 2 kilometres on foot into the village. Few people do the last part with luggage even in daylight.
