Fodele is a village in a valley of orange groves on the north coast west of Heraklion, set back from the sea below the national road. Fodele is known as the birthplace of Domenikos Theotokopoulos, the painter called El Greco, and a museum in a restored house outside the village marks the connection.
The village itself is small: a square with tavernas beside a stream, and the Byzantine church of the Panagia a short walk away.
Fodele beach lies a couple of kilometres down the valley at the mouth of the stream, separate from the village and reached by its own road.

The Piraeus boat ties up around six, so the roads this transfer uses are empty at the hour it runs, and the valley at that time is being worked rather than visited.
The road leaves the harbour, passes the city on its seaward side and clears the built-up area at Ammoudara.
It then climbs onto the cliffs above Lygaria and Agia Pelagia before turning inland behind the headland, and the valley opens below with the groves filling the floor of it.
Two turnings serve the area and they lead to different places: the village a couple of kilometres up the valley with its square and Byzantine church, and Fodele beach at the mouth of the stream. Both bays on this stretch of coast are hidden from the national road, and Fodele is hidden for a different reason: it sits inland rather than below the road, in a valley that opens to the sea a couple of kilometres further down.

Being set down there leaves a walk into the village or down to the beach, and the coach runs from Heraklion's bus station rather than the quay.
