Malia is a resort town on the north coast east of Chersonissos, known for two things that sit about a kilometre apart: the nightlife strip, and the Minoan palace. Malia's beach is one of the longest stretches of sand on this coast, running east from the town towards the dunes at Potamos.
The old village sits inland from the beach and is a different place entirely, with a square, a church and tavernas that have nothing to do with the strip. Visitors who book Malia for the archaeology and the beach rather than the bars generally stay in the village or at the quieter eastern end.
The Minoan Palace of Malia lies about 3 kilometres east of the town and is the third largest palace complex on the island, after Knossos and Phaistos.

Kokkini Hani, Gournes and Gouves pass first, then the exits for Anissaras and Chersonissos, then Stalida, which runs into Malia without a real gap.
Malia is three places under one name and the turning differs between them. The nightlife strip sits below the national road, the old village is inland and uphill with a square and a church, and the hotels out towards Potamos are at the far eastern end past the turning for the Minoan palace.
A dawn docking is the one hour of the week when the strip is genuinely quiet, which suits arriving guests and is worth knowing if the reason you booked the old village was to avoid it.
The KTEL coastal bus runs frequently between Heraklion and Malia and is much cheaper.
It leaves from the city's bus station rather than the quay, so after an overnight crossing it means moving into Heraklion with your cases first, then riding back out along the road the car would take directly.
