Port pickup

Your pickup at Heraklion Port

Your driver meets you in front of the Passenger Terminal at Heraklion Port, holding a banner with your name and the company name on it. Ferry arrivals cluster, so the terminal forecourt fills quickly; the banner is what makes your car findable in it.

Heraklion Port sits inside the city, a few minutes from the centre and about 4 kilometres from the airport. Heraklion Port is the island's main ferry gateway, taking the overnight sailings from Piraeus as well as the routes from Santorini, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos.

Overnight ferries from Piraeus dock early in the morning, which is the port's busiest window and the one where on-demand taxis are hardest to find. A pre-booked car is already waiting when the ramp goes down.

Cruise calls berth at the same port area and follow the same procedure.

Where we meet you

In front of the Passenger Terminal, where your driver waits with a banner showing your name and ours.

Stay at the terminal rather than walking out to the road. The port approach is one-way and busy at docking time, and the vehicle cannot stop on it.

Delays and waiting time

Give us your ferry or cruise line and arrival time at booking. We track sailing arrivals as well as flights, so a late docking moves the pickup rather than costing you the transfer.

Tell us as early as you can if your sailing is cancelled or diverted to another port, so the driver can be reassigned.

Heraklion

Arriving in Chersonissos

Chersonissos is the largest resort on Crete's north coast, built along a seafront strip east of Heraklion in the municipality of the same name. Chersonissos grew from a fishing harbour into a full resort town, and the old harbour is still the centre of it, ringed by tavernas and the boats that run day trips along the coast.

The resort divides clearly in two. The seafront and the main road carry the bars, the shops and the nightlife; the hillside villages behind it, Koutouloufari and Piskopiano, stay quiet and stone-built. Guests often book one expecting the other, so it is worth knowing which side of that line your hotel sits on.

The beach runs east from the harbour in a series of sandy bays broken by rock. Two of Crete's largest waterparks sit within a few minutes of the strip, which is why the resort draws families as heavily as it draws younger visitors.

Good to know about Chersonissos
  • The old harbour is the centre, with tavernas, day-trip boats and the seafront strip
  • Koutouloufari and Piskopiano sit on the hillside behind, quiet and stone-built
  • Sandy bays run east from the harbour, broken by low rock
  • Two large waterparks are minutes from the strip
  • The Minoan palace at Malia is a short drive east
Drop-off in Chersonissos

We drop you at the door of your hotel, apartment or villa, on the seafront or up in the hillside villages.

The strip is one-way in places and closed to traffic at its busiest in high season. Where that applies, the driver uses the nearest hotel entrance the vehicle can reach rather than leaving you to walk the last stretch with luggage.

Route

The drive from Heraklion Port to Chersonissos

The drive leaves the port gate, picks up the coast road east of the harbour and joins the VOAK within a couple of minutes. Because the port sits on the eastern edge of the city centre, nothing about this route involves crossing Heraklion.

From there it is the standard eastern run: the national road above the sea, past the exits for Karteros, Kokkini Hani, Gouves and Anissaras, then down into Chersonissos. Where the driver turns at the bottom depends on whether you are staying on the seafront or up in Koutouloufari and Piskopiano on the hill behind.

What makes this route different from the airport version is the timing rather than the road. Ferries from Piraeus dock early, typically around six in the morning, and at that hour the coast road is empty and the run takes closer to twenty minutes than twenty-five. The trade is that you arrive at your hotel long before any reasonable check-in time.

That is worth planning for. Most Chersonissos hotels will hold luggage and let you use the pool and the bar from arrival, but the room itself will not be ready until the afternoon. Tell the hotel your ferry is docking at dawn and they will usually make the arrangement in advance.

About 24 minutes is the normal figure at ordinary hours.

How else could you make this trip?

There is a city bus from the port area into Heraklion, and the KTEL coastal service from the bus station onward to Chersonissos.

At six in the morning that combination is thin. Frequencies are low before the working day starts, and the walk from the ferry terminal with a week's luggage is not a short one. Cruise passengers on a day call have a different problem again: the schedule is fixed, and a missed connection back is expensive.

Going home

Chersonissos to Heraklion Port: departure transfers

The return leg is the same journey in reverse: 26.1 km (16.2 mi), about 24 min, and the same fixed fare from €38 per vehicle. Your driver collects you from your accommodation in Chersonissos at the agreed time and takes you straight to Heraklion Port.

Chersonissos back to Heraklion Port is the same 26.1 kilometres in reverse, at the same fixed fare.

Sailings to Piraeus generally leave in the evening, so this direction usually runs against the afternoon traffic rather than with it. The pickup is set against the boarding time on your ticket, not the departure time, since boarding closes well before the ship sails.

Book both directions together and the return is held at the same fare. Switch the form at the top of this page to Departure, or select a return when you book.

When should the pickup be?

For a departure from Chersonissos we work back from your sailing: about 24 minutes of driving, plus the time the ferry line asks you to be at the terminal, which for vehicle-carrying sailings is longer than most passengers expect.

Give us the operator and sailing time at booking and the exact pickup is confirmed on your voucher.

What you get

Why book this transfer with Best Crete Transfer

Fixed price per vehicle

The fare covers the whole vehicle rather than each seat, so 4 people pay the same as 1. The price on your voucher is the price you pay, with no booking fee and no card surcharge.

Meet and greet by name

Your driver waits in the arrivals hall holding a sign with your name on it. You walk out of baggage reclaim straight to the car, without joining a taxi rank or agreeing a fare on the spot.

Child and booster seats included

Child seats cost nothing extra. Reserve the seat in the booking form and state the child's age, so the correct seat is fitted before the driver sets off.

Free cancellation

Cancel at least 24 hours before your pickup time and you pay nothing. Plans change; the booking does not lock you in.

Direct door-to-door routing

The vehicle carries your party and nobody else. It runs from the pickup point to your exact address, with no intermediate stops and no waiting for other passengers.

Flight-timed pickups, 24 hours a day

Your pickup is set against your flight number, not a clock time. Transfers run at any hour, which covers night landings and pre-dawn departures.

Every booking is confirmed by a person and carries a voucher showing your route, vehicle, pickup time and fare.
