Platanias is the largest resort on the coast west of Chania, at the far end of the continuous beach that runs out from the city through Stalos and Agia Marina. Platanias in Chania should not be confused with the smaller Platanias east of Rethymno: the two share a name and sit on opposite sides of the island.
The resort has two parts. The old village sits on a bluff above the coast road, with a church and tavernas at the top and a view along the whole strip, and the modern resort runs along the shore below it.
Platanias carries most of the nightlife on this coast, and the beach in front of it is wide sand facing the islet of Agioi Theodoroi offshore.

Georgioupolis, the Apokoronas slope and the climb over Aptera follow, Souda Bay opens below, and Chania is skirted on the bypass. Stalos and Agia Marina run out along the sand after it, and Platanias sits at the far end of the same beach.
