Platanias is the largest resort on the coast west of Chania, at the far end of the continuous beach that runs out from the city through Stalos and Agia Marina. Platanias in Chania should not be confused with the smaller Platanias east of Rethymno: the two share a name and sit on opposite sides of the island.
The resort has two parts. The old village sits on a bluff above the coast road, with a church and tavernas at the top and a view along the whole strip, and the modern resort runs along the shore below it.

The old village stands on a bluff above the coast road with the modern resort along the shore below it, so the final turn depends on which half your accommodation is in: the lanes up to the village are steep and narrow, the shore road is flat and straightforward.
The city bus from Chania runs the length of the western strip and stops at Platanias frequently.
Reaching it means the airport service into Chania first and a change at the central station, which turns a 37 minute drive into two legs and a wait. The bus also uses the old road and sets you down on it, which on this strip can leave several hundred metres to the hotel.
