Plakias is a resort on the south coast of the Rethymno region, set on a wide bay backed by mountains, with one long sand beach running the width of it. Plakias is reached from the north coast through the Kourtaliotiko gorge, a steep-sided ravine that the road descends for several kilometres before the sea appears.
