The city bus from Chania runs the length of the western strip and stops at Maleme.
Reaching it means the airport service into Chania first and a change at the central station, so the public trip is two legs and a wait. The bus also runs along the old road and sets you down on it, rather than at a hotel entrance which on this stretch can be some way off.
