Airport pickup

Your pickup at Heraklion Airport

Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall at Heraklion Airport, holding a sign with your name on it. Your transfer starts there rather than at a taxi rank, so there is no queue to join and no fare to agree on the spot.

Heraklion International Airport (HER) is Crete's main gateway and handled 4,039,249 international arrivals in 2025. Heraklion International Airport concentrates its arrivals into one short terminal, which keeps the walk from baggage reclaim to the meeting area brief even at peak season.

The driver confirms your name and destination, loads your luggage, and leaves from the airport car park. Nothing is settled on the day when you have paid online, and the fare on your voucher does not change.

The airport sits on the coast road immediately east of Heraklion city, which puts every eastern resort on a direct run without crossing town. Westbound journeys join the same national road in the opposite direction.

Where we meet you

Inside the arrivals hall, past baggage reclaim, at the transfers meeting area. Your driver holds a name sign that matches the booking.

Look for the sign rather than a taxi rank or a car park level. The phone number on your voucher reaches a person who can locate your driver, if the sign is not where you expect it.

Flight delays and waiting time

Give us your flight number at booking. Your pickup is then scheduled against that flight rather than against a clock time, and the driver is told to arrive later when the flight lands late.

Tell us as early as you can when a flight is cancelled or rerouted, so the driver can be reassigned.

Heraklion

Arriving in Chersonissos

Chersonissos is the largest resort on Crete's north coast, built along a seafront strip east of Heraklion in the municipality of the same name. Chersonissos grew from a fishing harbour into a full resort town, and the old harbour is still the centre of it, ringed by tavernas and the boats that run day trips along the coast.

The resort divides clearly in two. The seafront and the main road carry the bars, the shops and the nightlife; the hillside villages behind it, Koutouloufari and Piskopiano, stay quiet and stone-built. Guests often book one expecting the other, so it is worth knowing which side of that line your hotel sits on.

The beach runs east from the harbour in a series of sandy bays broken by rock. Two of Crete's largest waterparks sit within a few minutes of the strip, which is why the resort draws families as heavily as it draws younger visitors.

Good to know about Chersonissos
  • The old harbour is the centre, with tavernas, day-trip boats and the seafront strip
  • Koutouloufari and Piskopiano sit on the hillside behind, quiet and stone-built
  • Sandy bays run east from the harbour, broken by low rock
  • Two large waterparks are minutes from the strip
  • The Minoan palace at Malia is a short drive east
Drop-off in Chersonissos

We drop you at the door of your hotel, apartment or villa, on the seafront or up in the hillside villages.

The strip is one-way in places and closed to traffic at its busiest in high season. Where that applies, the driver uses the nearest hotel entrance the vehicle can reach rather than leaving you to walk the last stretch with luggage.

Route

The drive from Heraklion Airport to Chersonissos

The drive is short, straight and almost entirely on the VOAK, the national road that runs along Crete's north coast. It leaves the airport perimeter directly, so nothing about this journey involves crossing Heraklion.

For the first fifteen minutes the road sits above the sea on the right, passing the exits for Karteros, Kokkini Hani and Gouves. This is the most heavily built stretch of coast on the island and the traffic reflects it, but the road is dual carriageway for the whole run and rarely stops moving.

You leave at the Chersonissos exit and drop down towards the water. Which way the driver turns at the bottom depends on where you are staying: the seafront and harbour are straight ahead, while Koutouloufari and Piskopiano climb the hill to the right. Guests are often surprised by how steep that hill is, and by how different the two areas feel.

About 23 minutes is the normal door-to-door figure. It is one of the shortest airport runs on the island, which is a large part of why Chersonissos fills as quickly as it does.

Two details are worth knowing for arrivals specifically. The Star Beach and Acqua Plus waterparks sit within a few minutes of the exit, so families booking here often want the transfer to arrive before the parks close rather than simply before dinner. And late flights are easy on this route: at 23 minutes from the terminal, a midnight landing still puts you at the hotel well before one in the morning, which is not true of the eastern resorts an hour further on.

How else could you make this trip?

The public option is the KTEL coastal bus, which runs frequently between Heraklion and Malia and stops at Chersonissos.

It does not start at the airport. You would first need to reach Heraklion bus station, then take the coastal service, then cover the last stretch from the main road down to your hotel, which in Koutouloufari or Piskopiano means a steep climb. With luggage and after a flight, a 23-minute direct run is a different proposition.

Car hire is the other common choice here, and on this particular route it is worth thinking about twice. Chersonissos parking is tight through July and August, the seafront is partly closed to traffic in the evenings, and a car that sits unused for a week costs more than the transfer both ways.

Chersonissos to Heraklion Airport: departure transfers

The return leg is the same journey in reverse: 27.9 km (17.3 mi), about 23 min, and the same fixed fare from €38 per vehicle. Your driver collects you from your accommodation in Chersonissos at the agreed time and takes you straight to Heraklion Airport.

Chersonissos back to Heraklion Airport is the same 27.9 kilometres in reverse, at the same fixed fare.

The morning direction is the busier one. Traffic on the coast road builds westbound towards Heraklion between about 07:00 and 09:00, so departure pickups in that window are set a little earlier than the drive time alone would suggest.

Book both directions together and the return is held at the same fare. Switch the form at the top of this page to Departure, or select a return when you book.

When should the pickup be?

For a departure from Chersonissos we work back from your flight: about 23 minutes of driving, plus the check-in and security time your airline asks for, plus a buffer for the morning westbound traffic.

Give us the flight number at booking and the exact pickup time is confirmed on your voucher.
