Lygaria is a small resort in a narrow bay on the coast west of Heraklion, reached by a descent from the national road above it. Lygaria sits in a sheltered inlet between headlands, which keeps its beach calm and makes the settlement compact: there is only as much flat ground as the valley allows.
The beach is sand and shingle at the head of the bay, with tavernas set immediately behind it.
Agia Pelagia lies over the headland to the east and is the larger of the two, so Lygaria tends to be chosen by people who want the same coast with fewer rooms on it.

Beyond it the road climbs onto the cliffs, and this stretch of coast becomes a run of headlands with bays hidden between them. Neither Lygaria nor Agia Pelagia shows from above.
The turning drops steeply to the sea. Lygaria fills a narrow valley between two headlands, so the settlement is small by geography rather than by choice: there is only as much flat ground as the valley leaves, and the tavernas sit almost on the sand because there is nowhere else to put them. Both bays on this coast face away from the national road, which is why neither is visible from the car. Lygaria is the smaller of the pair and Agia Pelagia the larger and busier.
Nine properties make up the whole of it. Panorama Village, Angel Village Hotel and Apartments, Spiros-Soula Hotel, Irida and Pennystella Apartments sit at the bay or on the slopes above it, and on a valley this narrow the property name is the address.
The descent is also the reason 21 kilometres takes 27 minutes rather than the twenty a coast road would suggest. The last kilometre is steep and the lanes at the bottom are narrow, so the driver takes them at the pace the surface allows rather than stopping at the top.
No bus serves Lygaria directly.
The Rethymno coach passes on the national road above, which leaves a descent of well over a kilometre into the village and the same climb back out. It also runs from Heraklion's bus station rather than your address.
