Fodele is a village in a valley of orange groves on the north coast west of Heraklion, set back from the sea below the national road. Fodele is known as the birthplace of Domenikos Theotokopoulos, the painter called El Greco, and a museum in a restored house outside the village marks the connection.
The village itself is small: a square with tavernas beside a stream, and the Byzantine church of the Panagia a short walk away.

Two turnings serve the area and they lead to different places. The village sits a couple of kilometres up the valley with its square and its Byzantine church, and Fodele beach lies at the mouth of the stream on the coast. Arriving at the wrong one means returning to the main road to start again.
Which of the two you want is usually settled by where you are staying, and here that is a short conversation.
