Gavalochori is a village in Apokoronas, inland from the coast between Chania and Georgioupolis. Gavalochori keeps an unusually complete village fabric: Venetian and Ottoman houses, stone-paved lanes, and a folklore museum in a restored building near the square.
The village is known locally for silk lace and for the old wells cut into the rock nearby, which supplied it before mains water arrived.
Its setting is olive country rather than coast. The sea is a few kilometres north, and the village itself sits among terraces and stone walls.

The Apokoronas bus serves the larger villages on the main road from Chania's station, and the last stretch has almost no scheduled service. Reaching even that bus means going into the city from Souda first.
