Kalyves is a coastal village in Apokoronas, east of Chania, built where a small river reaches a long sandy beach. Kalyves is larger and more of a working village than the resorts around it, with a square, shops used by residents and a seafront that stays open through the winter.
The beach runs the length of the village and shelves gently, and a second smaller beach sits past the river mouth at the eastern end.

The bay here shelves gently and stays shallow a long way out, which is the reason families choose this coast over the open beaches west of Chania. A second, smaller beach sits past the river mouth at the eastern end of the village.
The Apokoronas bus reaches Kalyves and is inexpensive.
It runs from Chania's central station rather than from Souda, so the public version of this journey means getting into the city first after the boat, then coming back east along the bay. For 12.6 kilometres that is a long way round.
